1/23/2024 0 Comments Star wars rose tico movieThe Mandalorian has burned through a lot of goodwill as it meanders its way through season three, and with next week’s finale approaching, it could take a lot more than a cute green baby puppet to convince fans the franchise as a whole isn’t still spinning its wheels. It seems to be caught between Lucasfilm’s attempts to learn from the mistakes of its controversial latest trilogy and avoid succumbing to the “ MCU-ification” of its own IP. On the back of this year’s Celebration, Star Wars’ annual fan/industry convention, and the confirmation of three new Star Wars films, the franchise’s flagship TV show stands at something of a crossroads. It’s a query that reflects a larger one within the Star Wars universe. And even with it, the episode glossed over continuity and gave rise to what has become the series’ biggest question: What is this show even about? Without watching it, the first episode of season three felt like a jarring reset. Prior to the season’s release, another Disney+ series, The Book of Boba Fett, featured an entire stealth plot arc of The Mandalorian that served to connect the timeline of the show’s previous season with the one about to be released. They both have the same objective, which is to fight for the things you believe in and the people you love. One could argue that season three of The Mandalorian went off the rails before it ever debuted. During the press tour, Tran said , "I wish I could tell you more but I'm really excited for people to see interact. To make matters more bewildering, Kelly Marie Tran appeared to express excitement for scenes in the film and indicated that we would, indeed, see scenes that featured what was described above. Yes, The Rise of Skywalker is a crowded film, but it's crowded in a way that sacrifices character dynamics for action. Ultimately, Abrams wastes the character's potential by, instead, spinning the plot's wheels in fetch quests. She doesn't use her knowledge of Star Destroyer tech in the final battle (despite that being the reason she stayed with Leia in the first place). She doesn't accompany Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewbacca and BB-8 on their mission (she could have been the girl in the chair, offering guidance on where to go). These are compelling questions that could have been resolved in maybe five minutes of screen time in The Rise of Skywalker. But Rose genuinely wants to see others become the best versions of themselves they can be. Organa wants to restore the old government, seeing the huge events that led society astray. Organa and Erso are both motivated by grand ideals. And what Rose has that Organa and Erso don't is heart. We've had tastes of these characters, but it would be great to see them take on a bigger role. Both are the kind of characters who address their problems not with brawn or even fighting skill, but just their wits alone. However, these characters were never prominent figures, save for tw0: Bail Organa and Galen Erso. This places Rose in the same boat as other Star Wars characters in major canon. This makes her frankly ill-suited for fighting on the front lines, but superb at solving problems through either diplomacy or wits. She doesn't fight to hurt anyone but, rather, to protect the people she cares about. She approaches the Rebellion as someone who is fairly weak in terms of strength or fighting skills. There are Jedi, bounty hunters, pilots, rogues, strategists - but Rose doesn't neatly fit into any of those categories. Most Star Wars characters can be defined by how they fight.
